President's Message

By David Smith

One of the leading concerns presented to the SHA Board of Directors by the residents of Stonehenge is the parking of vehicles on our streets.  According to the covenants for our community, routine street parking of vehicles and boats is not permitted.  The enforcement of this provision in the covenants is difficult due to a number of factors.  However, everyone should appreciate the importance of maintaining our property values and uncluttered streets are an important factor when a visitor comes into our community to look at buying a home.

Break-ins and vandalism have become more of a problem for Stonehenge.  Fortunately the police department was able to apprehend a suspect in a rash of home break-ins near the Stonehenge shopping center.  Observant neighbors can be a deterrent to crime.  While some folks may want to form a Neighborhood Watch Program, others may simply want to band together to watch each other’s property.  The City of Raleigh and the Wake County Sheriff’s department have officers who will visit your neighborhood to talk about how to establish a Neighborhood Watch Program and how to make your home less vulnerable to a break-in.  If you live in the Raleigh city limits call Sgt. P. F. Capucille at 807-5433.

Elsewhere in the newsletter is an article by Lisa Barthelemy describing her efforts to get crosswalks installed at two intersections on Creedmoor Road.  No one person will be successful in this effort.  It will take many of us talking to county, city, and state officials to get the crosswalks installed.  If you have an interest in the project, I urge you to contact our local leaders.

The SHA Board of Directors is in need of more volunteers.  We elect officers on a calendar year basis.  If you have an interest in serving the community, please contact one of the Board members.  Also membership in the Stonehenge Homeowners Association is on a calendar year basis.  Your membership is important if the association is to continue to be a viable organization.

Lastly, now that school is in session we need to watch for children as they make their way to and from school bus stops.  Speeding on our neighborhood streets is always a concern but especially when little children are out in the wee hours of the morning.

Crosswalks Wanted!

Crossing Creedmoor Safely

Lisa Barthelemy

Any walker will tell you crossing Creedmoor at Howard is extremely dangerous.  Ditto, for crossing Creedmoor at Stonehenge.  There are no crosswalks to walk in; there are no pedestrian signals to alert that it is safe to cross.   I cross Creedmoor regularly with my three little children, but I can barely make it across before the light turns red.

Since January, several neighbors and I have been campaigning for crosswalks at Creedmoor and Howard as well as Creedmoor and Stonehenge.  You may have read a couple articles about the campaign in The News and Observer’s North Raleigh News section where staff writer Dawn Wotapka brings to light the hurdles we face and the slow but tangible progress we’ve made.

Currently, the recommendation for the crosswalks (two crosswalks and signals at Howard/Creedmoor and one crosswalk at Stonehenge/Creedmoor) has cleared the City, and is now in the hands of Steve Johnson, a DOT deputy division traffic engineer at the NC Department of Transportation.   The N.C. Department of Transportation recently recommended the crosswalks; however, there is no money in the budget to pay for it.

This is where you can get involved and make a difference.  Please call Steve Johnson at 560-6856 or e-mail him at sjohnson@dot.state.nc.us and let him know how important it is to get these crosswalks in – for the safety of all.  Budgets are so tight that the N.C. Department of Transportation is putting in crosswalks only where there have been accidents.  I personally think it is ludicrous to have to wait for an accident to happen before installing crosswalks.   Let Steve know your thoughts.  If he hears from enough people, I’m sure we’ll get these crosswalks in.

Please do not hesitate to call me should you have further questions 676-3078.  I thank you for your support! Lisa Barthelemy

Yard Sale

By Diane Lahati

Since the spring yard sale was beset by a heavy rain storm, we have decided to sponsor a fall yard sale this year.  The fall date will be October 5 with a rain date of October 12.  Advertised hours for the yard sale will be 8-12 am.  The Homeowner's Association will pay for newspaper advertising and prepare maps with participating addresses for distribution at South Trust Bank.  If you are interested in being a part of this event, please:  1. Call Fran Johnson at 847-5274 or email her at mfjohnson@earthlink.net with your address  2. Put a helium balloon on your mailbox on the day of the sale to help shoppers locate your home

Stonehenge Women’s Network

By Darlene Miller

The Stonehenge Women's Network is a group of women from the neighborhood who love to get together in a casual setting.  This year we have seven meetings planned and will be meeting at different member's homes in an effort to keep it "simple" and save money!!  If you are new to the neighborhood, want to meet some neighbors, enjoy having fun with other women or just plain need to get out of the house occasionally, please join us as we love to see new faces!!  For more information, please contact our president Char Rafferty at 848-6166 or mchart0128@aol.com or Darlene Miller at 518-2385-mdamiller_61@yahoo.com.  We are always looking for someone to host a meeting so please let us know if you are interested.

Gourmet Club

By Diane Lahti

The newly forming supper club in Stonehenge needs two more couples.  The group will meet four times per year, four couples per location.  Group members will change each time so you get to meet a lot of people.  The group splits the menu and everyone keeps track of their costs.  Everyone brings their own preferred beverage and evens up the expenses for the rest of the meal.  Recipes are provided so you don't have to be a great cook but you have to be willing to try some new recipes.  If any of you are interested, please let me know.  Char Rafferty is in charge.  If you are interested, you can call her or let me know and I will pass along the message.  The first dinner will be held September 21.  The menu will be Italian.

Halloween Parade

The tentative date is Saturday morning, October 26.  Please watch for neighborhood signs with specific information as the date approaches.
